MALA is delighted to announce that District Judge Afzal OBE has has been appointed as the President of MALA. We were honoured that he was our guest speaker at the 2017 MALA Ball and has been a strong supporter of MALA for many years.
District Judge Afzal OBE was called to the Bar (L) in 1999 and had a successful practice in crime, civil, family and immigration. He received an OBE in 2008 for his services to the judiciary and voluntary services to the disabled and then an Honorary Doctorate from Staffordshire University, where he studied for his LLB, in 2010.
He was sworn in as the first blind District Judge in 2017, appointed to the Midland Circuit. Previously, he had been appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2010 and a Recorder in 2015. District Judge Afzal OBE is currently a member of the Bar Representation Committee's Social Mobility Sub-Committee.
District Judge Afzal OBE is widely respected by the bar and solicitors who appear before him on circuit.
